Product Review: Cream of Rice Hot Cereal

Posted by: Marissa on July 29, 2010

The gluten free product that I am reviewing for you today has been in the Gling food listing for a very long time. In fact, that’s where I found out that there was such a thing as Cream of Rice Cereal. I was raised on Cream of Wheat Cereal and really missed it when I went gluten free. It was really exciting for me to discover that there was a gluten free alternative.

In all honesty, I was a little worried about what it would taste like. I’m sure that every one of us has fed rice cereal to our children, and remember how unappetizing it was. I mean, the smell alone was enough to deter me. My girl couldn’t get enough of the stuff when she was little, so who was I to argue with what she wanted to eat, right? When it came to me eating it, though... Well, I was nervous.

Since TanyaG had posted Cream of Rice in the food database, I asked if it was really recommended. I got a positive answer (the comments are still there :) so I looked for it in the grocery store. I am proud to announce that TanyaG did not steer me wrong!

Cream of Rice Cereal is smooth creamy and tasty. It is a lot like the Cream of Wheat I enjoyed all through my life. It is hot, filling and totally satisfying. The flavor is a bit more bland than Cream of Wheat, which makes perfect sense due to the fact that rice is more bland than wheat. It can be flavored with anything you have on hand. I love the fact that I can eat it every day for a week and never have the same meal twice.

The cereal cooks quickly and you have the choice of either using the stove or the microwave. Yay for convenience! My honest recommendation (if you have a little extra time) is to make it on the stove. Cream of Rice Cereal will clump up really bad if it’s not stirred enough, so using a whisk and a pot is perfect. If you do use the microwave, make sure you give the cereal a good vigorous stir every thirty seconds or so.

The box that Cream of Rice comes in looks tiny but contains nine servings. Honestly, it is so filling that I only eat half a serving at a time. If I were to eat it every day the box would last me two weeks. It is a great value for the few dollars you spend.

Overall, I can definitely recommend that you try Cream of Rice Cereal. It is healthy, convenient and naturally gluten free. It is also easily adaptable to adding extra nutrition by adding fruit or mixing it with milk or soy milk instead of water.

If you decide to try it, let us all know what you think! This cereal is so versatile that it might be fun to see how many different ways we can come up with to make it.
