Product Review: Udi’s Gluten Free Whole Grain Bread

Posted by: Marissa on Aug. 17, 2010

I did a review for Udi’s Whole Grain Bread awhile back on my Gluten Free Product Review Blog (GFPR). It was when I first discovered Udi’s. At that point I had just tried my first package of this gluten free bread and the review reflected exactly how much that first impression impressed me. I raved about the quality, the consistency, the flavor and everything else the bread had to offer.

So, when I pulled the loaf of gluten free whole grain bread out of the box that Udi’s sent me, I put it right into the freezer. This wasn’t because I didn’t want to eat it, it was honestly because I already had a half finished loaf in my cabinet and I didn’t want the new one to go bad :) This bread has become a staple in my house. We buy it every week without fail. It is one of the few gluten free products I have found that I absolutely cannot live without.

Most other gluten free breads that you can buy in the store are not so great. I’m not trying to be mean, here, but a few I’ve tried could pass for sponges. On top of that, most are made with rice flour and are lacking in nutritional substance as well. I went without bread for quite awhile because it wasn’t worth the money you had to pay for that tiny spongy loaf.

This gluten free bread is like nothing else out there. I would venture to say that unless you are a gluten free baking genius, you have not had bread this tasty since beginning your gluten free diet. The bread itself is soft and and delicious, even without toasting! It has a firm crust and a great whole grain texture. I was a whole grain bread lover before going gluten free and this bread tastes and feels just like I remember.

I won’t list all of the ingredients (because there a lot of them) but some that stuck out to me are brown rice flour, teff flour and flax seed meal. Yay for nutrition! The bread is also dairy free, soy free and nut free.

The price is not bad either. The loaves are still smaller than a “regular” loaf, but they sell for around five dollars. That is about the best price I’ve found on gluten free bread.

You can find Udi’s Gluten Free Whole Grain Bread in the freezer case, and I highly recommend that you do. If your grocery store doesn’t carry it, you can buy it online from the Udi’s website. I have no doubt that you will love it as much as I do.
