Product Review: Van’s French Toast Sticks
This week I had the opportunity to try something that was completely new to me, french toast from the freezer. I love the concept here. The box has six bread-shaped slices, and each slice splits into three dip-able “sticks”. The fact that the slices fit perfectly into a toaster makes for a very easy, and very fun, breakfast.
Van’s French Toast Sticks are cinnamon flavored. When they were in the toaster they had an irresistible smell, like walking by a Cinn-A-Bon. I was making coffee at the same time as I was toasting my new treat and the combination of smells made me grin.
If I had stopped there, my review of this product would be nothing but glowing praise. Unfortunately, I didn’t, which leads me to this very mixed review.
The flavor of the gluten free french toast sticks was sweet with deliciously spicy notes of cinnamon mixed in. The aftertaste was not. I really did not like the taste or the feel in my mouth after I ate the toast. It almost felt as if my mouth had a fine coating of grease in it.
The texture was likewise a variable thing. The toast was a bit crispy on the outside, especially on the edges. That’s great for me. Unfortunately, some of the edges were a bit too crispy. A couple times I thought I had bitten into an egg shell - strange, because Van’s French Toast Sticks are egg free.
The inside texture was soft and very good for the most part. The other part is that there seemed to be a few spots that were too moist, as if the toast were undercooked.
For the record, my daughter disagrees with me on every negative point here. She loved everything about this gluten free french toast and insists that we buy it more often. This fact leads me to say that I recommend Van’s French Toast Sticks for kids, but maybe not so much for an adult palate.
