Product Review: Gluten Free Sensations Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix

Posted by: Marissa on Dec. 28, 2011

This mix is the most interesting one I have found yet. When I first got it I thought it was a typical cookie mix. After reading the instructions I realized that what I had was, in fact, just a nice flour blend. This made me a bit skeptical. After all, if I’m going to make cookies from scratch, why do I need to buy a mix, right? Well, dear readers, this is why I try each product instead of just reporting first impressions :)

Ease of Use

To make these cookies you need the mix, a stick of butter, one egg, brown sugar, vanilla and chocolate chips. Cream the butter, vanilla, egg and brown sugar in a mixer, then add the contents of the cookie mix. Fold in the chocolate chips and drop and bake the cookies.

Appearance

The mix itself is just a little bag of what looks to be flour. The finished cookies are puffy, golden brown and full of chips.

Taste and Texture

I was not sold on this mix… until I tasted the cookie dough. This is the first time I have been able to enjoy cookie dough since going gluten free! I tell you, the cookies almost didn’t get baked, it was that good. I did bake them, though, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to finish this review!

The finished cookies were crispy/chewy on the edges and soft on the inside. They had a remarkable flavor and texture - I would never have guessed they were gluten free.

Versatility

This mix is essentially a flour blend with sugar in it. I suppose it could be used for just about anything, though I recommend trying the chocolate chip cookies :)

Overall Value

Gluten Free Sensations Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix rings in at just under $3. When I weigh that against buying all five different kinds of flour that are used, then trying to find just the right blend, I’m sold.

Rating

I really liked this mix. I am not a whiz at blending gluten free flours and getting the results I want. I like the fact that this mix gives me the ability to make cookies like I used to without having to do complicated (and expensive) experiments first.
